“Nobody’s free until everybody’s free.” – Fannie Lou Hamer
Today, we honor Juneteenth; a day that commemorates the final enforcement of emancipation in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed two and a half years earlier, it wasn’t until this day that over 250,000 enslaved African Americans in Texas were actually freed.
Juneteenth reminds us that freedom was not given all at once, and even now, our work toward true justice and equality continues. This day is more than a celebration; it’s a call to action.
